All prices are the 16:00:00 ET close, single feed, verified in-session. Instrument set matches the Thursday premarket edition.

S&P 500 Sets Record Close on Flat PPI; Platforms Snap Back as Palantir, Micron and Tesla Lead — Cisco's Worst Day of the Cycle

Market Context: July producer prices came in flat month-over-month against +0.2% expected, extending the disinflation run after Wednesday's in-line CPI. The S&P 500 closed at a record 7,798.99 (+0.65%), the Nasdaq-100 led at +1.15%, and September hike odds collapsed toward ~32–35%. The composition flipped again: the platform megacaps that fell Wednesday rebounded hard — Meta +2.78%, the day's best Mag-7 name — while Wednesday's earnings casualties deepened. Crude fell a second day.

Where the session finished, measured at the 4:00 PM NYC close.

What Actually Happened

Two claims in circulation do not survive the board.

"AMZN soft on legal/AI headlines" understates the anomaly. Amazon at −0.80% was the only Magnificent Seven name to fall on a record-close day. Every other platform snapped back from Wednesday's selloff: Meta +2.78% (best of the seven), Apple +1.00%, Microsoft +0.90%, Alphabet +0.82%. The Wednesday rotation out of platforms lasted exactly one session.

"AMD mixed with semis" misses the split inside semis. Memory kept working — Micron +4.23% extended its run to three straight sessions — while AMD was dead flat at +0.02% and the earnings casualties collapsed: Cisco −8.40% on its revenue outlook, Coherent −7.99%, Cerebras −11.85% deepening from its −15% pre-market low to close down nearly 12%. The SOX gained just 0.46% against the NDX's 1.15% — chips lagged the index for the first time this week.

The day's real leaders were idiosyncratic: Workday +17.78% on reported Silver Lake buyout talks, Palantir +4.66% reversing three soft sessions, Tesla +3.80%, Intel +3.58% extending through $104 after Tuesday's $95 offering price — the deal is now 10% in the money for participants.

The Nasdaq-100 closed above 30,000 for the first time — 30,084.50. That milestone is absent from most coverage.

SpaceX gave back 3.33% to $141.29, retaining most of Wednesday's AI-revenue surge and holding well above the $135 IPO. The 20 August lock-up window is five sessions away.

Off the board: Nebius closed $255.04, −1.60%, consolidating Wednesday's 34% earnings surge.

PPI and Rates

July PPI printed unchanged month-over-month against +0.2% expected; the annual rate eased to 4.7% from 5.5%, and core rose 0.2% against 0.3% expected. Stacked on Wednesday's in-line CPI, the September picture moved decisively: hike odds fell toward ~32–35%, from 40% Thursday morning, 51% Tuesday and ~67% a week ago. The 10-year eased toward 4.65%.

That is a 35-point collapse in hike probability over seven days, driven by three prints — payrolls, CPI, PPI — and a 6% two-day slide in crude.

Geopolitics and Commodities

Brent settled at $87.07 (−2.15%) and WTI at $81.25 (−2.43%), the second consecutive decline. Brent's intraday low of 85.87 shows how far the deal-hope leg ran before the close. The overnight sequence remains unresolved: Turkey's Anadolu reported a U.S.–Iran ceasefire extension citing Pakistani sources, Iran denied any progress within hours, and confirmed Hormuz traffic sits near three-month lows. Oil is trading the demand cuts and the deal hope, not the flows.

Poland. The record run ended emphatically: WIG20 closed at 4,006.49, down 1.44% — the first decline after three consecutive record closes — with WIG at 152,383.42 (−1.02%). Per ISBnews, turnover reached 2,355 mln zł, with PKO BP the most traded at 384 mln zł; 133 stocks rose, 183 fell. Orlen (−2.5% intraday) and KGHM led the index lower as crude slid, while mWIG40 actually gained 0.20% — the damage was concentrated in the crude-linked blue chips, not the broad market. The rates note eased to 4.641% stateside the same day Warsaw's oil beta cut the other way.

Asia. Tokyo extended for a second day, the Nikkei closing at 68,308.59 (+1.16%) — note this is the official daily settle; the last intraday print ran higher at 68,406, the same minute-bar-versus-settle gap flagged earlier this week. Hong Kong slipped 0.17%.

United Kingdom. Bank Rate holds at 3.75% (30 July, 6–3). Softer crude eases imported-inflation pressure.

Outlook

A record S&P close built on the broadest session of the week: platforms up, memory up, small caps up, with weakness confined to three earnings-specific casualties and Amazon. Two soft inflation prints in 24 hours have taken September nearly off the table, and the long end confirmed rather than fought the move. The tests ahead: Friday's retail sales, whether crude's slide extends, the 20 August SpaceX lock-up, and whether Amazon's isolation is noise or the start of something.

Information Sources

Prices. Every index and ticker figure is the 16:00:00 ET close from Yahoo Finance daily bars. Oil settles were finalised from the BZ=F and CL=F daily-history tables. Wednesday's base closes were triple-verified in the prior edition across Yahoo, The Motley Fool and Barchart.

Daily-history tables. VIX (14.63), gold (4,363.60), Bitcoin (63,402.17), the Nikkei (68,308.59) and the Hang Seng (25,396.51) were read from their Yahoo daily-history tables — the same method that finalised oil. The Nikkei row corrects yesterday's premarket edition, which carried the last minute print (68,406.29, +1.31%) rather than the official settle (68,308.59, +1.16%).

The 10-year (^TNX 4.641%), DAX (26,299.74) and FTSE (10,772.67, from the quote page's previous-close field) came from the same daily-history tables. Warsaw's official close — WIG20 4,006.49 (−1.44%), WIG 152,383.42 (−1.02%) — is from the ISBnews closing bulletin via Investing.pl, corroborated by Inwestycje.pl and XYZ.pl's session recap (4,002 at 16:20 CEST, closing 4,006.49).

PPI. BLS: unchanged m/m, +4.7% y/y, core +0.2%.

Corporate. Workday–Silver Lake talks, Cisco guidance reaction: as reported intraday; WDAY close verified at $206.45. Hormuz overnight sequence: CNBC, 13 August.

Fed odds. CME FedWatch context: ~32–35% hike, from 40% at Thursday's pre-market and 51% Tuesday.
